Exchange Values

Exchange Values on the Table is a social sculpture - connective aesthetics project. It creates an interface between small producers in the Carribean and consumers.

It not only follows a product - in this case bananas - to illumine the situations of those who produce it, trade it and consume it, it also explores the role of imagination in transformation. In a world flooded by information exploring the gap between knowing and doing becomes more significant every day. As does Bertold Brecht's idea of 'internal mobilisation'.

This connective aesthetics project has been in 12 venues in several different countries since 1996.

At its most recent venue in Zurich we drafted a handbook that enables people to use the project as an arena for social sculpture proactices with groups of individuals, schools or organisations. It also helps people to understand and develop social sculpture - connective practices for themselves.

For the story of the project and writings by people from a range of disciplines see the Exchange Values site.
