Peter Schata
Peter Schata was born in 1950 in the Ruhr-valley, the steel and mining area of Germany. He comes from a family of coal-minors and craftsmen, first working as shop-window designer before attending evening classes and then continuing at the Hibernia Schule, a local Rudolf Steiner school which combines practical and intellectual education.
Following this he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he met Joseph Beuys in 1971, entering a relationship with Beuys that included work with the Honey Pump project at documenta 6 and continued until Beuys death in 1986.
After leaving the Akademie where he had also been the Meisterschüler of Rolf Crummenauer, he worked as an artist (drawing, photography and typography) and moved to Achberg (Lake Konstanz). Here he joined the Achberg group, a network of people actively involved in developing the idea of social sculpture in its scientific and practical dimensions. During this period he worked as a publisher for the Achberg group, publishing works that included “Soziale Plastik” (1976) and “Abendunterhaltung” (1977).
In 1990 he moved to Krefeld, working as medical projects coordinator at the University Witten/Herdecke and for other independent institutions. He now runs a bookstore in a centre for complementary medicine in Krefeld.
Alongside this he is involved in the development of new media projects, is active in the Foundation for Culture and Ecology; and lectures, writes and organises exhibitions on the subject of Beuys and social sculpture.
His long standing relationship with the SSRU and its evolution, continues now in several new collaborations that include facilitating the SSRU's Translator's Forum and exploring the development of an interactive project on Beuys' blackboards.
Peter is a father of two little daughters.
