und. Institut für Kunst, Kultur und Zukunftsfähigkeit / und.Institut
(and. Institute for Art, Culture and Sustainability)

Founded in 2004 und.Institut interconnects the field of art and culture with the filed of sustainability and develops exemplary models of productive exchange. It initiates, conceives and organises transdisciplinary co-operation with partners from the fields of art, culture, science, economy and the civil society. The institute seeks to be a partner to all those in the field of sustainability who are struggling for open-mindedness and creative diversity.

In 2005 the institute became a member of the Round table of the German National Committee of the UN Decade of "Education for Sustainable Development.
The name of the institute refers to Wassily Kandinsky´s essay "and" written in 1927. In this the artist says:

'Whilst the 19th century dedicated itself to the principle of "either-or", that is to specialisation, segregation and to a strict distinction between science, technology and art, now the "and" must follow - the age of synthesis and interdependency'.

und.Institute has an office in Frankfurt/Main, headed by art historian and curator Heike Strelow, and an office in Berlin, headed by cultural researcher Hildegard Kurt.
Since its foundation und.Institut has participated annually in collaboration with the International Weimar Summer Courses, offering courses on art and sustainability. These are run by Hildegard Kurt together with Shelley Sacks. The theme of this year´s course is "From Bauhaus to Social Sculpture".
