Translator's Forum

The Translator's Forum is one of several specialist members forums on this site.

Experience has shown that translating philosophical texts by Beuys and others, as well as material on Beuys' expanded conception of art, is not as easy as it seems. 

Peter Schata (SSRU Core Network member) who proposed this forum, has spent 20 years dealing with Beuys' and other social sculpture related texts translated from German into English and other languages. He has regularly found significant mistakes: many due to a lack of contact with the thinkers and language that informed Beuys' work; some based on a misreading of Beuys' handwriting, and others on the lack of knowledge about specific cultural expressions related to the lower Rhine region of Germany, which was Beuys' home.

This Translator's Forum is an attempt to overcome some of these obstacles and so faciltate more accurate and appropriate translations.
